Sofitel Announces Royxeen Giam as New Head Chef

Sofitel Wellington, is honoured to announce celebrated culinary star, Royxeenn Giam (also known as Roy) as Head Chef at their resident restaurant Jardin Grill and lobby bar The Green Room.

Former Hippopotamus head chef, Roy has successfully carved his way through the sophisticated Wellington gastronomy scene over the last eight years and promises to bring a vibrant diversity of culinary influences to Sofitel’s luxury dining experience.

Sofitel Wellington’s General Manager, Melissa Shaw is thrilled to have a top chef as Giam bring the story of Sofitel through its menu.

“We are delighted to have Roy lead the team as head chef where his cutting-edge techniques, finest epicurean creations, and refined international palette will delight the dining experience,” says Shaw.

Roy’s accolades include bronze medal in Fish and Seafood Main-Course and winner of the class for Venison Main-Course in 2011 at the New Zealand Culinary Fare in Auckland. Furthermore, was also awarded as silver medallist in Pork Main-Course in 2009, and bronze medallist in Salmon Main-Course in 2010 at the Wellington Food Show.

Roy promises to bring his global background to Sofitel Wellington; showcasing quality local ingredients with French and Malaysian influences.

“The Wellington scene has always inspired my approach too. I am delighted to share my background with a place that has cultivated my passion for food throughout my career,” says Giam.

Diners can expect inspired dishes including pepper rubbed pork belly from the rotisserie, hand cut Taupo eye fillet steak tartare, smoky venison loin grilled on wood fire, and asparagus grilled over the wood fire with almonds and burnt butter.

Menu highlights in The Green Room lobby bar include wood roasted merino spare ribs, with black garlic and mustard, mushroom cappuccino, savoury biscotti and plates of charcuterie.

Sofitel Wellington’s Jardin Grill opens from 6am daily, and The Green Room from 7am daily.
