Farmlands announces Kaikoura as the next destination to receive a Graham Hoete mural in one of the most geographically significant art campaigns in New Zealand.
World famous kiwi artist, Graham Hoete, also known as Mr G, will be painting the town beautiful on the one-year mark of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Kaikoura last year. This mural is set to honour Kaikoura’s recovery, strength and community resilience since November 14, 2016.
Commissioned by Farmlands Co-operative, HeART of the Community will see Mr G paint locally-inspired murals on 15 of the 82 Farmlands stores across the North and South Islands, each town inspiring a different story.
The series is a collaborative public project which encourages local communities to get involved by expressing their unique experiences and sense of community identity. With six locations already complete, Mr G says he is excited to capture the unique spirit of Kaikoura in his artwork.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to bring attention and beauty to such a hard- working community in the process of restoring their town since the earthquake last year” Mr G says.
Kaikoura District Council Mayor, Winston Gray says he is grateful to have Farmlands commission an incredible artist to promote the community in Kaikoura.
“My main focus post-earthquake has been to join together the community and recover what it had, but to also help it move into a brighter future. I believe this project truly honors the continuous efforts of the people here and will continue to inspire the community to work towards a more beautiful, recovered Kaikoura.”
Farmlands Chief Executive Peter Reidie says Famlands is passionate about being an integral part of their shareholders’ rural communities.
“We are proud to honour community pride and hope that HeART of the Community is a way to strenghten the bond between Farmlands and the communities that own it.”
