Internationals Take Karangahake Gorge

Does this guy look familiar? I met him on my last adventure to Rangitoto. Adventure is all about meeting new people, seeing the world through your own eyes and expanding your perspective. I’m so glad we ran into them on the trail and they offered to take our picture. This introduced me to a whole new group of friends that I never would have met, had we not been open to striking up conversation with other random travelers.

Okay, enough of that ramble, onto todays adventure…

The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is situated at the base of the Coromandel Range and follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi. It featured historic railway remains within a natural gorge setting, including two long steel truss bridges. The walkway lines the gorge and then opens out to the Ohinemuri river. The trail loops around at the top and has short turnoffs to view the gorge, the window track lookout, and explore the historic gold mind caves and tracks.

This day, although muddy, rainy and wet, was definitely one for the books. It was the day, I had the pleasure of meeting and exploring an amazing country with people from around the world. Bram and guy, that I mentioned in my previous post, introduced us to two girls from Holland, one from Paris, and another man from Germany. The eight of us rented two cars and ventured to the Karangahake Gorge to explore the historic beauty that was there to be discovered.

Originally, we planned to trip to Coromandel, but a traffic jam backed up for hours brought us to this beauty just down the road. Life is funny the way it works. I’m glad too because I’ve found the best relationships and most beautiful memories come when you’re least expecting it.

Cheers friends, thanks for reading.
